Meditation is a technique where you sit or lie down
and allow the body to relax, and then begin to calm your mind. Its
a practice of allowing. Practicing and using this relaxation response
is recommended once or twice a day for 20 minutes, although in the
beginning, if you can get through 5 minutes, you're doing well.
To motivate you, remember that the positive effects of meditation
include improved physical and psychological health! Here's how to
meditate:
• Sit comfortably and close your eyes.
• Select a word to focus upon. This may be a word, phrase
or a prayer. Frequently selected words are calm, ocean, relax or
peace. Choose one that generates a good feeling in your body.
• Breathe slowly and naturally. Silently repeat your phrase
or focus word each time that you exhale.
• If you become distracted or your mind wanders, redirect
your thoughts back to your focus word.
• Relax for about twenty minutes daily if you can.
• If you don't have immediate success, don't give up. You're
mind has been moving for as long as you've been alive. It takes
time to train it to quiet down. |
